Throwing multitudes of prescription drugs at people is not good mental health care

From my own experience, I suggest fresh air, sunshine, exercise, and avoiding stress for better mental and physical health.

Two stories got my attention recently, because both had video footage showing the multitudes of prescription medications two people were on when they died.

In both cases, the surviving family members blamed the overprescription of medication by doctors for the deaths of their loved ones.

The first incident was a death by drug toxicity:

Parents say son asked them to intervene in his treatment at Tomah VA

“The parents of a Wisconsin Marine are speaking out about the problems in the Veterans Administration system. Jason Simcakoski, 35, died of mixed drug toxicity Aug. 30 at the Tomah VA Medical Center. An autopsy report said that 14 different medications were in his system at the time of his death.

“All of them were prescribed by VA physicians…”

The second incident was death by police due to a violent personality change caused by the overprescription of psych meds:

Wife: Officer shooting suspect’s death ‘devastating’

“The wife of a man who was fatally shot by Wyoming police after he allegedly opened fire on officers says she hopes her husband will be remembered for more than the violent incident…

“She showed 24 Hour News 8 a plastic bag filled with medications she said her husband had been prescribed. She said she strongly believes that the mixture of medications caused her husband to act out of character the day of the shooting.

“He was hallucinating. … It was not Alan,” she said…”

  1. Marine’s Overdose Death Sparking VA Opiate Debate

“WASHINGTON — Nearly a year after his death, Marine Corps veteran Jason Simcakoski was at the center of a debate on Capitol Hill on Wednesday over new regulations for opioid prescriptions at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“His parents, widow and daughter watched as a Senate committee weighed an overhaul bill, sponsored by a Wisconsin senator, designed to curb overdose deaths at the state’s Tomah VA and other medical centers across the country. It was a crucial first step for the legislation, though many hurdles remain and its future is uncertain…”

  2. Report: VA at Fault for Marine Veteran’s Overdose Death at Tomah

Stars and Stripes | Aug 10, 2015 | by Heath Druzin

“WASHINGTON — An inspector general’s report faults a Wisconsin Veterans Affairs hospital for the accidental overdose death of a Marine Corps veteran that sparked outrage and legislation aimed at strengthening guidelines for prescribing painkillers.

“The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General found that Jason Simcakoski’s death at a Tomah, Wis., VA center in August 2014 was tied to a toxic mix of prescribed drugs and also faulted VA staff for botching resuscitation efforts once he was found. The Tomah VA has been dubbed “Candyland” for what some say was wanton overprescription of opiates…”
