SOME’s mission is both simple and direct: to serve the needs of the poor in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. In fulfilling this mission we cannot work alone. They need your support. Please make a gift to SOME today, and help us to continue to offer a hand to those in need.

Your generosity provides dignified help to men, women, and children who are suffering from hunger and homelessness. Though none of us gives much thought to hunger as we sit down to a big meal at the holidays, for many it is inescapable. This year your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar by two generous anonymous donors to SOME.
When I was young, my parents struggled to keep me and my six siblings fed and housed after a factory accident left my father permanently disabled. We were briefly homeless and were only able to survive because of the extraordinary kindness of good, caring people, like you. My own experience with hunger and homelessness makes me very aware that right now, thousands of families in difficult situations are trying to scrape together meals and find a safe place to sleep. Due to high poverty and the disappearance of affordable housing, the number of DC families in this position is greater than ever. There are 1,104 homeless families with 1,880 children in Washington, DC – 18% more than just one year ago.
Homelessness is on the rise, and a staggering number of people in our nation’s capital are living in abject poverty. Nearly one in five Washington residents, including 31,769 children and 8,439 senior citizens, are now living below the poverty line; nearly 7,000 of these folks are also homeless. Unable to find a decent job or afford housing, they are sleeping on the streets, in shelters and in other places not meant for human habitation.
Your donation to SOME is used wisely. Over 90% of your gift goes directly to help people in need. For five consecutive years, Charity Navigator has awarded SOME its highest 4 Star rating, indicating that SOME consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible manner. PBS’s Nightly Business Report has also highlighted SOME’s excellent stewardship and financial transparency.
Thank you for your continued support that will restore hope, dignity and independence to poor men, women and children of our nation’s capital.
May you and your loved ones have a blessed and joyful holiday season.
