Occupy Wall Street’s Strategy and Philosophy: Occupation and Decommodification

Occupy Wall Street

Philosophy: The Occupation and Decommodification Philosophy of Occupy Wall Street (NYC) and Stop The Machine (DC) [this article has been reposted here]

Adbusters’ Culturejammer Headquarters: “#OCCUPYWALLSTREET is a leaderless people powered movement for democracy that began in America on September 17 with an encampment in the financial district of New York City. Inspired by the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and the Spanish acampadas, we vow to end the monied corruption of our democracy.” See: http://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/occupywallstreet

Occupy Wall Street: “OccupyWallSt.org is the unofficial de facto online resource for the growing occupation movement happening on Wall Street and around the world. We’re an affinity group committed to doing technical support work for resistance movements. We’re not a subcommittee of the NYCGA nor affiliated with Adbusters, anonymous or any other organization. Occupy Wall Street is a people-powered movement that began on September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District, and has spread to over 100 cities in the United States and actions in over 1,500 cities globally. #ows is fighting back against the corrosive power of major banks and multinational corporations over the democratic process, and the role of Wall Street in creating an economic collapse that has caused the greatest recession in generations. The movement is inspired by popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, and aims to expose how the richest 1% of people are writing the rules of an unfair global economy that is foreclosing on our future.” See: http://occupywallst.org/about/

Stop The Machine: “It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions. We call on people of conscience and courage—all who seek peace, economic justice, human rights and a healthy environment—to join together in Washington, D.C., beginning on Oct. 6, 2011, in nonviolent resistance similar to the Arab Spring and the Midwest awakening.” See: http://october2011.org/statement

October 2011 Stop The Machine

Take The Square: “Take The Square was born from the demonstration on May 15, 2011 in Madrid. The demonstration called from the association Democracia Real Ya (Real Democracy Now), was the prelude of a new movement that was about to emerge. Once the demonstration was finished, some of those attending decided spontaneously and independently of the organizers, that a demonstration was not enough, so they decided to camp in the main square of Madrid (Puerta del Sol), thus starting a new project in the history of mankind.” See: http://takethesquare.net/about-us/

Peer-to-Peer Communism vs. The Client-Server Capitalist State: “Proposing an approach to class struggle based upon venture communism and copyfarleft would be shocking to many revolutionaries due to the utilization of joint stock corporations, bonds, rental agreements, copyright licenses and the retention of the market exchange of the products of labor. Therefore, it must be noted that venture communism and copyfarleft are only a means of class struggle, not ideal goals in and of themselves. They are intended as a means of organizing production towards the goal of building the economic capacity required to engage in class conflict, and transform a capitalist system. In the words of the Industrial Workers of the World ‘not only for everyday struggle with capitalists, but also to carry on production when capitalism shall have been overthrown. By organizing industrially we are forming the structure of the new society within the shell of the old.

Capitalism, a mode of production where the worker earns only subsistence while property owners retain the remainder of the productive output, can only create a society where the interests of the property owner will be reflected in the social institutions, and the interests of subjugated producers. Both venture communism and copyfarleft have, as their goal, the creation of a productive commons that producers can use to accumulate mutual wealth, and thus work towards realizing their historic role of creating a society free of economic classes.

As long as producers operate within the capitalist mode of production, they cannot change society politically. Whatever wealth producers can apply to influencing social institutions must come from the share of production they retain, and thus will always be smaller than the share retained by the owners who can use it to prevent change. When we employ a commons of productive assets, which have no individual owners but are collectively owned, we retain the wealth we create, and thus the possibility for a new society is within our grasp.” ~ The Telekommunist Manifesto, Dmytri Kleine

The Telekommunist Manifesto, Dmytri Kleiner, October 2010 – See: http://snuproject.wordpress.com/2011/02/08/93/

“OCCUPATION OF THE WORLD, will be about a REAL and TOTAL change in production, consumption, distribution, ownership relations and thus governance mechanisms we had at hand, which had empowered only 1% against the 99%.

2011 and 2012 will be remembered the years in which the ancient regime has fallen and the mature and advanced human civilization has born. Our generation will be the maker of this change. Lets bring all the forces together on 11.11.11 and make this happen for the people we love, and for the future generations!”

1. Emancipatory orientation (but plural, not with a closed ideology).

2. Typologically placed in some half point among the movements with orientation of power and the movements with cultural orientation.

3. An antimodernist orientation or some kind of alter-modernization or criticism to the linear conception of history; the belief in progress as a material and moral perpetual development, nor the inconditional optimism towards science and technology and, mainly, the instrumental reason.

4. Heterogeneous social composition with predominance of professional persons of social and cultural services.

5. Differetiated goals and action strategies.

6. Decentralized and antihierarchical organizational structure, networking with a low level of institutionalization and professionalization, with low confidence in bureaucracy and charismatic leadership.

7. Politization of the daily and private life, with the attempt to develop alternative forms of communal life, production and consumption, transforming men and women who compose society into a concrete process.

8. Pragmatic and flexible use (in general) of methods of collective action, from non conventional to more conventional methods. Non conventional will be understand as the civil disobedience, the passive resistance and the direct action, all with strong expressive elements and often pedagogic or counterinformative.

Strategy: The Otpor strategy of Occupy Wall Street and Stop The Machine:

“But Otpor’s founders realized that young people would participate in politics — if it made them feel heroic and cool, part of something big. It was postmodern revolution. “Our product is a lifestyle,” Marovic explained to me. “The movement isn’t about the issues. It’s about my identity. We’re trying to make politics sexy.” Traditional politicians saw their job as making speeches and their followers’ job as listening to them; Otpor chose to have collective leadership, and no speeches at all. And if the organization took inspiration from Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., it also took cues from Coca-Cola, with its simple, powerful message and strong brand. Otpor’s own logo was a stylized clenched fist — an ironic, mocking expropriation of the symbol of the Serb Partisans in World War II, and of communist movements everywhere.” See: http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2011/02/16/revolution_u?page=full

Jacques Ellul on propaganda (Think: Otpor/Occupy Wall Street):

“Propaganda’s great power is precisely that it furnishes modern man with simple, global explanations, broad, dogmatic causes without which, engulfed by information, he cannot live.

Man is doubly reassured by propaganda: first, because he sees in it an explanation which he can readily understand of the events as they occur; second, because he is promised certain solutions to problems which arise when his limited personal experience yields to objectivity.

But propaganda also teaches him that these problems can be solved only if he participates in the actions proposed for their solution. This is how it makes the individual feel his worth.

Overwhelmed by information, he regains his balance, thanks to propaganda.

He had acquired a sense of his extreme helplessness in a world that had become too vast and too complex, and now he becomes aware of his own importance.

Propaganda tells him that his adherence is essential, that his intervention is being relied upon, that his action is decisive, and that nothing can be solved without him.

While information is necessary for self-awareness, propaganda is necessary to prevent self-awareness from turning into despair.

Man is enriched by the conviction that he can intervene effectively in political life. Furthermore, propaganda teaches him that the extraordinary problems which information has revealed can be solved, but on condition that a certain party, a certain nation, a certain movement, triumphs; and that he, an ordinary individual, will be the artisan of this triumph and will be clothed in glory.

Thus information receives its answer and is put in its true place. It does not produce further obstacles; on the contrary, it becomes another reason for action.” ~ Jacques Ellul

“Certainly I’ll take some heat for messing with this controversial subject, but the fact is that there’s a LOT of evidence pointing out for this conclusion: TPTB are pulling the strings behind the “Occupy” movements, through US government/CIA fronts, which are using the crowd as pawns in the “problem + reaction = solution” type of events. For the record, I’m not talking about mere agents infiltrated amid the protesters. I’m talking about the same huge apparatus used in “soft coup” operations, carried out to take down political regimes.” ~ undercoveralien

  2. My opinion is that it is a colored revolution. History demonstrates that it always has been. Just look at the paint splashed on the car of royalty in the London protests.

Is the CIA behind all this? Maybe. Maybe not. It seems as if they are doing the same old thing they’ve always done in the past-trying to force others to report back to them out of fear. It didn’t work prior to 9/11 and it won’t work again.

If the Occupy crowd keeps singing about taking from the rich and giving to the poor, most will analyze those lyrics. Who, exactly, is the rich? So far they’ve demonstrated that they think it is the street vendors and other small businesses just trying to eke out an existence in this economy. They are well clothed and well fed. A stark contrast to many of the homeless that are more than likely mentally ill. (There are many homeless that are very intelligent but are in that situation because of the market conditions today-they should make that point clear). It’s easier to attack the small businesses because they can’t afford to pay for the security like the big corporations can. They know this. So, does this help their cause?

If they’d just give a look at how the system is really operating, they’d be pleased. An instance: in Michigan, Detroit or nearby, crime has forced people from their homes. Instead of giving the homes to someone that would occupy them, they sell them to the police at an almost “free” price. That’s like rewarding them for not doing their job! And, in Florida, as we’ve seen in recent news, the police think they are entitled to whatever they want because they belong to some union that is more powerful than the citizens. They, as government employees, can and do jeopardize the safety of their citizens to benefit themselves. (Almost Soviet like, huh?).

The Feds have demonstrated their propensity to do the same with Operation Fast and Furious (which made everyone furious fast!), and the armed invasion of a Gibson guitar plant-they were just trying to save the planet-screw the business and the people! (It’s not like they were doing cross-directional drilling and letting the sludge kill off all the farmers animals and their livelihoods).

The global strategy for a peaceful world solution? Hmmm. I think it’s merely some more of the same old ’60s strategy where they try and convince the population to believe that the Jews are taking over the pyramids in Egypt, aliens will return and show us how to use all of our brains, the conservative Christians will fight tooth and nail to save Jerusalem from destruction by the evil anti-Christ (today it’s Iran), the Muslims will fight to wipe-out the infidels (everyone that isn’t them), and the journalists and hippie wanna-bes will try to convince A Zen thing as I read on the Huffington Post just today. us to become ONE! Just like in the good old days. (That’s because they’ve outsourced a lot of our jobs to India and they spy on Pakistan and round up terrorist-for a price- for our government).

Is the government using the media to further their agendas? Yes! It’s clear by all the “expertise” they spew on National television trying to amass the citizens patrols instead of them doing their job. Which brings us back to the colored revolution-are we being brainwashed so they can get copyrights for their own self-interests?

Why is Anonymous the bad guy and then the good guy? Bad if they attack banks; good if they attack Mexican drug cartels. Do we need them to take down Parliament? We don’t have a Parliament…yet.

One thing I’ve noticed is they have access to more public files than ever before. It’s easy to recruit others into their “volunteer” citizen patrols by simply victimizing them. Like the case of missing Lisa Irwin. She was born on 10/11/10 and just celebrated her first birthday 11/11/11. Now they can’t figure out the how and why of the cellphone calls, the fire, the satanic artwork in the drainage ditch, nor the reported sitings of a man carrying a child just after midnight. But, they can figure out which TV figurehead to call in to run the dog and pony show and teach us all how to not be so apathetic!

Just like in the good old days…the media will run the show for their causes. Almost like a rhythmic poetic time warp that constantly repeats itself. Like becoming One!

But, when people get wind of these protesters breaking and entering to give to the poor-mainly themselves- gun sales will go through the roof!

Even our political candidates want to legalize drugs, i.e., Ron Paul. Heroin should be a choice, especially if you live in a state near the border and do not care about the people affected by these addicts and the lives that would be ruined and the children abandoned in lieu of a high. But, he’s Baptist so it must be okay. More guns will keep these druggies at bay! And, if they could just turn them on to Jesus then only the Christians would be immune from the drugs on the streets.

But, who really cares? The conspiracy theorist have the world ending in 2012 anyways, as do the Iranians.

So, let’s eat, drink and be merry and become One because we’ve only a short time left! Lol!

That’s just my opinion and thank you for the the space to air it.
