Aaron Alexis, 34, of Texas IDed as Suspect in Washington Navy Yard Shooting: Report

Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old man from Fort Worth, Texas, was identified as the shooting suspect in the rampage that killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday.

Scott Gordon of NBC-5 in Dallas-Fort Worth reported that Alexis was arrested by Fort Worth Police Department in 2010.

He recently began working as a civilian contractor for the Navy. Law enforcement officials told NBC that they identified him via fingerprints.

It is unclear what his motive was. Alexis allegedly had a shotgun and a handgun on him.

He allegedly entered the base with another man’s ID card who used to work there, officials said. The name of the man whose ID card was found is being questioned.

There is no information on a connection between him and man whose name was on the ID card he used.

Fort Worth man accused in Washington Navy Yard shooting

FORT WORTH — The man suspected of killing 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard has been identified as Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth.

Alexis, 34, was found dead at the site of the Monday morning shooting in Washington.

Police say they do not have a motive for the shootings.

Nutpisit Suthamtewakul, owner of Happy Bowl Thai in White Settlement, said Alexis was “my best friend.”

“He lived with me three years,” Suthamtewakul said Monday afternoon. “I don’t think he’d do this. He has a gun but I don’t think he’s that stupid. He didn’t seem aggressive to me.”

Alexis was working for a computer contractor, Suthamtewakul said.

Alexis, whose most recent address was 7940 White Settlement Road in Fort Worth, show that he was arrested in September 2010 for discharging a firearm within a municipality. The records do not indicate that Alexis was ever formally charged in the case.

Somsak Srisan, who owns the property at 7940 White Settlement Road, said Alexis has not lived there for six to eight months.

Later that same month, Tarrant County court records show, The Orion at Oak Hill apartments in Fort Worth began eviction efforts against Alexis.

Police say 2 shooters have killed 4, injured 8 on grounds of Washington Navy Yard

Police now believe two shooters, including one in fatigues, have killed four people and wounded eight others at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, throwing the region into fear and chaos during the morning commute.

At least one of the shooters is “down,” police said mid-morning, but it was unclear whether that means the suspect has been arrested or shot. They said the other suspect remains at large, and police believe they have pinned down one between the third and fourth floors of one of the buildings on the installation in Southeast Washington.

Navy spokesman: 2 suspects ‘down’ after deadly shooting at Naval Yard

Two suspected shooters “are down” at the Washington Navy Yard, according to Ed Zeigler, director of Public Affairs for Naval District Washington. Zeigler was not able to confirm whether the suspected gunmen had been taken into custody or killed.

(Witnesses in video on page say fire alarm went off and an announcement was made saying it was a fire emergency. Witness also reports the shooter was dark skinned.)

Washington Navy Yard shooting: Active shooter sought in Southeast D.C.

WASHINGTON – (WJLA) At least eight people were killed Monday morning when a person or persons opened fire inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard, law enforcement sources confirm to ABC7.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said one gunman in the Navy Yard shooting is dead. But she said there are potentially two additional shooters on the loose.

She said one of the potential additional shooters is described as a white male in a khaki tan military uniform who was armed with a handgun. He was last seen at about 8:30 a.m.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said in a mid-day news conference that one of the suspected shooters is dead, while authorities are looking for two other suspects wearing green and tan military style clothing.

“The big concern for us right now is that we have potentially two other shooters that we have not located at this point,” Lanier said.

Lanier described one as a white male wearing what appeared to be a khaki tan military uniform and a beret, and carrying a handgun. She said police also are looking for a black man, about 50, wearing an olive military-style uniform, and possessing a “long gun.”

Police are asking anyone with information on these two people to call 202-727-9099.

Obama: Navy Yard shooting victims are ‘patriots’

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Monday called the victims of the Navy Yard shooting “patriots” and vowed that federal authorities would work closely with local police to make sure “whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.”

Obama’s comments on the shooting reflected the murkiness of what is now a still-fluid situation after Monday morning’s mass shooting at a U.S. military installation in the nation’s capital. Shortly before Obama spokes, Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that one shooter was dead and that police were searching for two more possible shooters.

NBC, CBS quickly retract ID of Navy Yard shooter – Shooter had Rollie Chance’s Identification

Once again, major news organizations have blundered on a huge crime story.

NBC News and CBS News today identified a suspect in the carnage at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., then rapidly retracted the story.

The embarrassing episode was reminiscent of similar overzealous reporting during the Boston Marathon massacre, when a number of news outlets prematurely reported that an arrest had been made.

CBS and NBC reported what they said was the name of the suspect in today’s D.C. shooting. But very quickly they basically said, “Never mind.”

At 12:58 p.m ET, Charlie Kaye of CBS took to Twitter to tweet, “BREAKING. @johnmillercbs advises the initial reports identifying the suspected shooter as Rollie Chance are wrong.”

Seven minutes later, NBC’s chief White House correspondent, tweeted, “NBC News: we are now NOT reporting name of shooter; retracting that report. deleting those tweets.”

Rollie Chance Wrongly ID’d By NBC, CBS As Navy Yard Shooter

A man named Rollie Chance was initially identified as the Navy Yard shooter (or one of the suspected gunmen) by two major networks before he was found to be home and safe during the incident and in the aftermath. The misidentification of Rollie Chance is reminiscent of early Newtown shooting reports, during which gunman Adam Lanza was initially and wrongly identified in several media reports as his brother Ryan Lanza, who was not involved with the Sandy Hook shooting.

Navy Yard suspect arrested in ’04 Seattle shooting

The man identified as the shooter in the Washington Navy Yard slayings had been arrested in Seattle in 2004 for shooting out the tires of a parked car in what he described as an anger-fueled “black out.”

Two construction workers building a new home told police that Aaron Alexis walked out of a home next door on May 6, 2004, pulled a pistol from his waistband and fired three shots into the rear tires of their parked car.

U.S. Navy was warned that Washington shooter ‘heard voices’

Rhode Island police warned the U.S. Navy last month that Washington Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis had reported “hearing voices,” raising further questions about how he gained security clearance at the complex where he went on a shooting rampage.

Officials say Alexis, a Navy contractor and former Navy reservist, opened fire at the Naval Sea Systems Command on Monday, killing 12 people before police shot him dead…

He told police that he had twice moved hotels to avoid the noise he heard coming through the floor and the ceiling of his rooms, and that the people following him were using “some sort of microwave machine” to prevent him from sleeping.

After Navy Yard shooting, Obama says Congress should act

One day after a gunman killed 12 people in a mass shooting at the Navy Yard in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol, President Obama said on Tuesday that it is up to Congress to firm up the nation’s gun laws.

Obama made an unsuccessful effort earlier this year to strengthen gun laws— most notably the background check system for firearm purchases — after a December shooting rampage at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school left 20 children dead.

Washington Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis acted alone: FBI

Aaron Alexis, the gunman who was shot down after opening fire at the Washington Navy Yard Monday, is believed to have acted alone.

The FBI gave additional details about the shooting on Tuesday afternoon, including the fact that Alexis was armed with a shotgun lawfully purchased in Virginia.

Valerie Parlave of the FBI said the authorities did not believe that Alexis was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle. He did, however, gain access to a handgun after the attack began.

The FBI continued to ask the public for any information they may have regarding Alexis.

Contractors shocked by Navy Yard shooter’s security clearance

Contractors who do government work in the Navy Yard area said Tuesday that they don’t feel safe at their jobs after learning that contractor Aaron Alexis was cleared to work at the military facility despite a discharge from the Navy following aggressive and violent behavior.

“It’s shocking,” said Sidney Antommarchi, an enterprise architect for a firm that manages contracts for the Department of Defense. “I would expect a security clearance investigation would have turned up something like that.”

Former Seattle home of Navy yard shooter visited by FBI

Hours after authorities believe 34-year-old Aaron Alexis went on a deadly shooting spree in the Washington D.C., Navy yards, FBI agents and Seattle police officers knocked on the door of the Seattle home where he used to live. It was also the site of Alexis’ first arrest for firing guns in anger, in 2004.

The FBI confirmed their agents were hoping to question Alexis’ relatives who still live in the Beacon Hill home. As they exited the home Monday night, the agents would not tell KIRO 7 if the family was cooperating.

Washington Navy Yard shooter practiced with AR-15 at Virginia range two days before rampage, lawyer says

Aaron Alexis, the Washington Navy Yard shooter, rented an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and used it for target practice at a Northern Virginia gun range and store less than two days before his shooting spree, according to the lawyer for the store.

J. Michael Slocum, a lawyer for Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, Va., said in an email to NBC News that on Sept. 14 Alexis also bought a Remington 870 shotgun and a “small amount of ammunition — approximately 2 boxes- 24 shells.” Alexis listed his residence as being in Texas.

A closer look at security at NAVSEA HQ, Building 197

The headquarters, Building 197, contains classified and highly sensitive information about technical details of Navy ships and weapons, and it is closely guarded.

Visitors must first get access to the Washington Navy Yard with a military or civilian photo ID…

Capt. Michael Graham, who has worked there in Building 197 since 2008, said he had never seen a shelter in place drill at NAVSEA. The shelter in place order came shortly after initial reports of the shooting.

“I’ve seen the normal fire drills things like that, but never a shelter in place drill,” said Graham. “Normally the drills you have are to get out of the building.”

D.C. massacre: Gun usage, violent video games cloud shooter’s past

Aaron Alexis, the suspected gunman in the U.S. Navy Yard shooting episode that left 13 people dead, had a checkered past that included run-ins with gun charges, violent video games and alcoholism.

Motive Still Unknown As FBI Continues Investigation Into Navy Yard Shooting

“We believe at this time that the deceased shooter, Aaron Alexis, acted alone,” Parlave told the press, “And with no other suspects at large, the investigation has moved into a phase of evidence recovery and information gathering.”

What we did learn from Parlave’s briefing is that Alexis entered Building 197 at the Washington Navy Yard with “legitimate access…as a result of his work as a contractor,” and that he “utilized a valid pass to gain entry into the building.”

Parlave also commented on the misinformation floating around the media over the past day, particularly in regards to the alleged AR-15 semi-automatic rifle Alexis used, and cleared up by saying that he used a shotgun obtained legally in Virginia and possibly a handgun that he picked up after he entered the building. Parlave confirmed that Alexis did not use an AR-15.

Finally, Parlave shared what the FBI has learned about the days leading up to yesterday’s shootings, saying “Alexis arrived in the Washington, D.C. area on or about August 25th.” According to Parlave, “he has stayed at local hotels in the area since that time,” but most recently, the FBI learned that he had been staying at a residence in Southwest D.C. since September 7, and they’re looking into that.

Navy Yard shooting: AR-15, back in the news — briefly

A U.S. law enforcement official said Monday that gunman Aaron Alexis unleashed a barrage of bullets using an AR-15, a rifle and a semi-automatic handgun. Authorities believed the AR-15 was used for most of the shooting, the official said. The news prompted Sen. Dianne Feinstein, one of the strongest proponents of a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15, to issue a statement the same day asking, “When will enough be enough?”

Navy Yard Shooter: What about that alleged AR-15?

Let’s take a loot at some of the reporting on the AR-15…

The Associated Press:

“Alexis carried three weapons: an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun, and a handgun that he took from a police officer at the scene, according to two federal law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation. The AR-15 is the same type of rifle used in last year’s mass shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that killed 20 students and six women. The weapon was also used in the shooting at a Colorado movie theater that killed 12 and wounded 70.”

Officials: Navy Yard shooter carved odd messages into his gun before carnage

The phrases were: “Better off this way” and “My ELF weapon,” according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

The officials cautioned they do not yet know what, if anything, Alexis meant in the etchings.

ELF generally stands for “extremely low frequency,” and can refer to weather or communications efforts, among other things.

Alexis, who was battling mental health issues, told police in Rhode Island in August that he was hearing voices of three people who had been sent to follow him and keep him awake and were using “some sort of microwave machine” to send vibrations into his body, preventing him from falling asleep, according to police reports.

The law enforcement officials said they do not know if he was referring to those vibrations in his carvings. The Navy has used extremely low frequencies in several capacities, including a joint effort with the Air Force on the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP). HAARP is often cited by conspiracy theorists.

Daily Mail – Washington shooter was a ‘cold blooded killer’ who tried to recreate the bloody slaughter he enjoyed in video games during massacre, says ex-gaming buddy

The Washington shooter tried to recreate the bloody slaughter he saw in video games during his massacre, a friend claimed on Tuesday.

Aaron Alexis ‘trained’ himself on Call of Duty then used buckshot bullets to see his victims get blown up, said Michael Ritrovato, who has know him for four years.

Mr Ritrovato said the use of buckshot showed that Alexis had been cold-blooded and had not just snapped.

Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis told VA doctors he was not thinking of harming others

In both cases, doctors sent Alexis home with the medication, identified by law enforcement officials as Trazodone, a generic antidepressant that is widely prescribed for insomnia. The VA doctors told him to follow up with a primary-care doctor. It is unclear whether he did.

“Mr. Alexis was alert and oriented, and was asked by VA doctors if he was struggling with anxiety or depression, or had thoughts about harming himself or others, which he denied,” the Department of Veterans Affairs said in a memo sent to Congress on Wednesday.

Horsford aide in mystery side story to Navy Yard shooting

“I pulled up New Jersey to M Street, and that is where I saw a man laying on the corner.

“At first he was unattended but within a few seconds I heard sirens barreling down the street and police officers there with yellow tape telling people to back away,” he said…

“The man on the ground was Vishnu Pandit, 61, who was one of the dozen workers at the Navy Yard killed by the gunman. Pandit, who had spent 30 years with the Navy, was carried from the fourth floor of Building 197 and driven by a security guard to that corner to wait for an ambulance.”

One Response to Washington Navy Yard Shooting (News Links)

  1. Okay, so the updated, revised official version of this convoluted tale is that he entered the building with shotgun in a bag. (He bought 24 shells the preceding day along with the shotgun), shot a guard, grabbed his gun. (10-12 shots?) He went directly onto the 4th floor, ducked into a men’s room, came out firing, stopping intermittently to reload, killing 12, maiming others from the fourth floor down to the atrium, then had a 30 minute gun battle resulting in his own demise.

Now, I am no gun expert, but I thought shotguns were used for protection a close range, had to be reloaded after every shot, and are the preference for self protection at home generally because of the short distance the lead falls, so as not to harm one’s neighbors next door.

Yet he used 24 shots, killed 12, maimed others from a fourth floor range down into an atrium, and had a 30 minute gun battle with police. Witnesses stated he was a bad marksman, shot over their heads, and described the initial gun shots as ” pow, pow, pow, then a quick succession of pow, pow, pow, pow, pow” And yet all victims died shotgun wounds from a sniper positioned four floors up.

That just doesn’t pass the smell test. Other strange facts regarding this story are as follows:

Alexis sustained an upscale lifestyle, living in a luxury apartment in Fort Worth on the salary of a delivery person for a very tiny Thai Food restaurant; as well as able to move and live in multiple states, travel to Thailand for a month– but friends say his only complaint was lack of funds, no job, and a car in desperate need of repair.

And in spite of multiple arrests, an unimpressive resume as an electrician’s assistant, he manages to get a high tech job, completely vetted with a security clearance.—yet it only took a 10 second google search for the average person to find an arrest record in FW, TX in 2010, not to mention the navy being contacted directly by the NY police about a recent incident.

Strangely enough, although a highly trained CERT swat team was in gear, ready to intervene within minutes of the initial gunfire, they were ordered to stand down by the Capitol police watch commander.

    And while witnesses described 3 men, one bald black man (Alexis), one whites man in khaki camo, (identified, and ruled out), and a black man, 50s, gray sideburns in olive drab garments;
(a fairly complete, explicit description) ; police halted the search for the last man within hours, stating that there was indeed determined to be only a lone gunman.

    mmmmmkay.
