Windows on the World – WTC 1
Back before 9/11, when I was living in Arkansas, working nights at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, and days at a printer, I had an acquaintance, whom I had met at B&N, a regular customer, who was a very well-connected, knowledgeable, and very well-armed Lubavitch Jew (at the time, I was a very well-connected (in Arkansas), knowledgeable, and very well-armed Catholic Christian).
He and I had numerous heated debates regarding Palestine and Israel – me siding with Palestine and him siding with Israel, obviously – and I learned a lot from him, about things I didn’t know.
At the time, I was just getting involved in politics, having decided to run for US Congress 2nd District, which is the greater Little Rock area.
US federal Judge John Roll – Murdered 1/8/2011 – Tucson, Arizona
I was just thinking, again, tonight, about the murder of US federal Judge Roll in that Safeway parking lot at the corner of Ina and Oracle (Casas Adobes) in Tucson, Arizona, where I also once lived, recently, and I was reminded again of a question my “friend” in Little Rock once asked me: “What”, he asked, “is the most powerful position in the US federal government?” I thought for a moment and I don’t remember what I said: “Senator?” “President?”, but, whatever I said, it was the wrong answer, because, as he told me: “a federal judge” was the right answer, and I have never forgotten that, or him. I should have known the answer but, at the time, before 9/11, I didn’t.
After our conversation, thanks to him, I did; and, as I said: I have never forgotten this.
He also told me a lot about Houston, Texas, and what all was happening there which, at the time, seemed odd, and only in the last few years has it become evident to me that he was quite correct, about Houston, Texas, much to my dismay.
After 9/11, my Lubavitch “friend” told me: “I was just at the Windows on the World restaurant in Tower 1, the day before it happened!”. “Wow!”, I said, “That was too close! I’m glad you and your wife are okay.”
